Why it is renowned

In its profile of Sarah Müllertz, the American trade magazine JCK shows KINRADEN's use of mpingo, the dark wood long used for oboes and clarinets, with the large Doric earring.1 Vogue Scandinavia picked the Doric Medium 'Gemini' earring, in 18 carat gold and sterling silver, for its A to Z of Nordic jewellery brands.2 KINRADEN calls the large earring the original of the line.3

The story

Doric belongs to KINRADEN's Stilos collection, which takes its repeated forms and proportions from the columns of ancient Greek temples and is made in the house's three materials: 18 carat gold, sterling silver and mpingo blackwood.4 The large earring is a single piece with a hollow body, developed by Sarah Müllertz, which keeps it light; it is made by hand in recycled sterling silver and measures 2.4 by 5.2 centimetres.3 The small earring, 1.5 by 3.2 centimetres, is made by hand in Copenhagen in recycled 18 carat gold.5 A medium size sits between the two, as 'Gemini' in gold and silver and as 'Athena' with mpingo inlays, and there are extra small and tiny sizes.43 In the mpingo versions a rounded body of the wood hangs from a long silver hook; the wood comes from FSC-certified forests in Tanzania.6 The line also takes in pendants, hollow and light, in several sizes, and an open ring that wraps around the finger.78 The silver is moving to Silnova, a patented alloy with palladium against tarnish.8
