Why it is renowned
Lurpak Spreadable, launched in Britain in January 1997, gave buyers the taste of butter straight from the fridge and became a major source of growth for Lurpak in its largest market.1 In 2019 Arla described Lurpak as the UK's number one butter and spreadable brand.2 The spreadable range also includes Lighter, Lightest and Organic versions.3
The story
Denmark had seen a spreadable fat under another name from April 1990, sold with the line that good taste had become spreadable straight from the fridge.1 Lurpak brought its own to the United Kingdom in 1997.1 It starts with Lurpak butter made from fresh milk with a pinch of salt; rapeseed oil and a little water are added to keep it soft at fridge temperature, and the butter makes up 64 per cent of the tub.4 It is sold in tubs from 250 g to 750 g.4
