Why it is renowned
The Oxford Companion to Beer credits Tuborg with bringing the pilsner to Denmark with Grøn Tuborg in 1880, and calls it the most popular beer in the country.1 It is the brewery's flagship.2 The year 1880 stands on its label.3
The story
Tuborg's first beer was Rød Tuborg, a dark lager in the Bavarian style then usual in Denmark; the pale pilsner with the green label followed in 1880.1 Brewing at the original site in Hellerup ended in the 1990s, and Carlsberg's brewery at Fredericia in Jutland is now the only one in Denmark that brews it; abroad it is brewed in many countries.13 It is a bottom-fermented lager brewed on lager malt, a lightly roasted pale malt, with a mild taste, an aroma of flowers and grain and a moderate bitterness.43 As brewed in Fredericia it has 4.6 percent alcohol.3 The bottle carries a pull-ring cap that opens without a bottle opener.3
