Why it is renowned

In 2006 Beer Geek Breakfast was voted the best stout in the world on the beer site RateBeer, from a batch of about 100 bottles.1 Straight after the result, at least six American importers asked for the rights to it, and Shelton Brothers ordered a full shipping container.1 It stayed near the top of RateBeer's stout rankings, and Mikkeller calls it the beer that started the brewery's success abroad.12

The story

Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Kristian Keller were brewing at home in Copenhagen when they made an export stout, around 2006, that they found a little plain.1 On the advice of Peter Zien of AleSmith in San Diego, they brewed it again and poured in French-press coffee after fermentation.1 To meet the orders, the beer moved to Gourmetbryggeriet in Roskilde, where Mike Murphy brewed it as part of a 3,000-litre order of several beers, while the two founders French-pressed about 40 litres of coffee in one night.12 Long sold in a 33 cl bottle, it was brewed at Lervig in Stavanger in 2017 and put into an all-black 50 cl can, to the same recipe.3
