Why it is renowned

John Rasmussen first brewed Ale No. 16 in 1995; it was judged Denmark's best beer in 1997, and in 2000 it took third place in the world.12 The brewery's door sales draw tourists as well as locals.3

The story

Hans Poul Rasmussen founded the brewery on 15 April 1885, and it is the oldest family-owned brewery in Denmark.13 John and Ellen Rasmussen took it over as the fourth generation on 1 January 2001.1 At its own maltings in Refsvindinge, Funen barley is malted largely by hand.1 The brewery still makes skibsøl, the smoked-malt ship's beer once brewed for long voyages, and the Danish Gastronomic Academy honoured it for keeping it alive in 2021.1 Since 2024 Thisted Bryghus has brewed its best-selling beers under licence.1
