Why it is renowned

The Christmas tablecloth is one of the signature designs of the Georg Jensen Damask collection, and it has been woven for Christmas tables for more than forty years.1 Its motif of braided Christmas hearts and stylised spruce twigs comes in white, winter grey, hazel wood and several reds.1 Bodil Bødtker-Næss, who drew it, was one of the textile artists around the Georg Jensen Damask looms in the 1970s.2

The story

Bodil Bødtker-Næss (1942–1988) trained in textiles at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where John Becker and Franka Rasmussen taught her, and her damask patterns were built from leaf shapes held by precise geometric lines.2 She designed the Christmas tablecloth for Georg Jensen Damask in 1975, and four years later its Easter counterpart.2

The cloth is damask woven from double-twisted combed cotton.1 Rectangular cloths are 140 or 165 cm wide and run up to 350 cm long.1
