Why it is renowned

Strand was the first product Benjamin Hubert's London studio Layer made for Muuto, and Hubert was the first British designer the company worked with.12 Dezeen and Wallpaper* covered its launch in September 2019, when it was shown in Copenhagen and then at Muuto's space in Heal's in London during the London Design Festival.12 The press noted how it is made: a fibrous polymer sprayed onto a turning steel frame, an idea taken from the way a silkworm wraps itself in its cocoon.12

The story

Hubert, who founded the design agency Layer, drew Strand for Muuto in 2019.31 Once hard, the sprayed polymer clings to the ribs of the frame, covers the bulb and diffuses the light.12 When the lamp is lit, the lines of the frame show faintly through the shell.2 The pendant gives soft light through the shade and direct light through its open top and bottom.4 The lamps are made by a manufacturer in the Veneto region of Italy.5 The first collection held four pendant shapes and sizes, to hang alone or in groups, and the family now also has a table lamp in two sizes, the larger one for the floor.15
