Why it is renowned
The British design magazine OnOffice named the Mosaik among the Bent Karlby lamps in the showroom of LYFA's return at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.1 LYFA counts it among Karlby's best-known designs.2
The story
Bent Karlby designed the Mosaik series in 1959.3 It rests on one idea: a conical shade and a brass tube, combined into pendants, clusters of two or three shades, an up-and-down pendant, and table, floor and wall lamps.3 The cone directs an even light downward; an opening at the top lets a thin stream of light fall on the brass.3 Known for soft light and organic forms, Karlby here worked with pure geometric ones, the cone and the cylinder.32
The shades are steel, matt white or matt black outside and white inside, on solid brass fittings.3
