Why it is renowned

PP Møbler calls the Captain's Chair the most static and classic of Wegner's chairs: a strictly geometric frame with armrests that curve around the sitter.1 Like the Cow Horn, Bull and Minimal chairs, its joints leave no room for error.1

In 1978 more than 600 special pp52 chairs went on board the DFDS ferry Dana Anglia, built to sail between Denmark and England.1 After a storm wrecked the ship's other furniture, all but two of the chairs came through, and they stayed on board for more than forty years while the ship was renamed and sailed routes across Europe.1

The story

Hans J. Wegner designed the chair in 1975 for PP Møbler, as a summing-up of what he saw as an essential Wegner chair.1 The armrest joins a length of steam-bent wood to two pieces of solid wood cut side by side from one 2½-inch plank. A strip of contrasting veneer separates the bent and solid parts, and wengé tenons join the two solid pieces at the back.1 This gives the comfort of the Round Chair from smaller timber.1

The pp62 has a seat woven from paper cord, and the pp52 has an upholstered seat. Both come in oak or ash, soap-treated or oiled.1
