Why it is renowned

Grete Jalk designed the GJ Chair, model No. 9-1, in 1963, forming it from two pieces of moulded plywood.12 The Museum of Modern Art in New York has her Lounge Chair of 1963 in its collection and on view.3 Only about 300 of the original chairs were made, and few survived.2

The story

Grete Jalk (1920–2006) opened her studio in 1953 and, taking a lead from Alvar Aalto's bent plywood and Charles Eames's moulded plywood, made bold curved designs.1 The cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen manufactured the chair.1 In 2008 Lange Production resumed production.2
