Why it is renowned
The Spanish Chair was praised for its elegance and materials when it appeared.1 Fredericia, for which Mogensen was the founding designer, has made it since 1958.2
The story
On a journey through Andalusia Mogensen saw a chair with broad armrests of a kind built in Spain since the Middle Ages; he reworked it in solid oak and saddle leather for Fredericia in 1958.2 The seat and back are vegetable-tanned saddle leather from the Swedish tannery Tärnsjö Garveri, held by buckled straps that can be tightened as the leather stretches.2 It is made in oak or walnut.2
