Why it is renowned

The CH25 caused a stir when it came out in 1950: paper cord, a wartime substitute for seagrass, had not been used in furniture before.1 It has been made without a break since then, alongside the CH24, better known as the Wishbone Chair, introduced the same year.12

The story

It is one of the first four chairs Hans J. Wegner drew for Carl Hansen & Søn after their collaboration began in 1949, and it went into production in 1950.1 Wegner liked the look of paper cord and that it does not stretch.1 A skilled weaver needs about ten hours and some 400 metres of cord to make the seat and back by hand, in a weave that shows on both sides of the backrest.12 It is made at Carl Hansen & Søn's factory in Gelsted on Funen.2
