Why it is renowned

The Wishbone Chair, also called the Y Chair, became Wegner's greatest commercial success and has never left production.¹ In the early 1950s, when Danish furniture was drawing attention abroad and above all in the United States, it made up more than half of Carl Hansen & Søn's sales.²

The story

In 1949 Carl Hansen & Søn asked Hans J. Wegner for a chair of high quality that could still be made in series.¹ He drew four: the CH22, CH23, CH25 and the Wishbone Chair, CH24; all went into production the following year.¹ It has stayed in production since,¹ made by Carl Hansen & Søn, whose factory is in Gelsted on Funen.²
