Why it is renowned
Toms counts Yankie Bar among the American-inspired products of the years after the Second World War, and its advertising leaned on that American appeal.1 The bar lost ground during the Vietnam War, when "Yankees go home" became a common chant, and recovered once the war ended.2 It was one of the Toms icons played by Danish actors in the Familien Tomsen television campaign, which ran from 2002 to 2008.1
The story
Just after the Second World War, the United States high command in Germany asked Toms to make a candy bar for American troops there, and paid with cocoa beans.2 The bar was named Yankie Bar after the Yankees, spelled with "-ie" so that Danes would not say "-ee".2 In 1956 Toms launched the Holly Bar, a similar bar with white nougat and roasted hazelnuts.2
