Why it is renowned
The Model D was the first Steinway & Sons loudspeaker and laid the foundation for Steinway Lyngdorf, the partnership of the piano maker and Lyngdorf Audio.12 The hi-fi site StereoNET wrote that it has the credentials to back up its maker's praise, pointing to its open dipole design and the 170 hours of machining in each speaker.3

The story
The collaboration began with a promise that a Steinway Lyngdorf system would reproduce the sound of a Steinway & Sons grand piano as faithfully as possible; the Model D, launched in 2007, was the result.2 Peter Lyngdorf took his cue from the way a piano sounds in a room.3
It is an open dipole: a tweeter, two midrange drivers and four large woofers sit in a rigid aluminium frame with no cabinet, so it sounds from the front and the back, and the bass cancels sideways to cut reflections from the side walls.1 The baffle is milled from solid blocks of aluminium, with more than 170 hours of machining behind each speaker.1 Two built-in digital amplifiers give each speaker 800 watts.1 Each stands 205.8 cm tall and weighs 174 kg.1
