Why it is renowned
Stereophile reviewed the Helicon 400 Mk.2 in 2008 and reported that the Helicon line had been DALI's biggest earner throughout its history.1 It found the speaker open and spacious, with a wide soundstage, and the curved cabinet graceful.1
The story
DALI introduced the Helicon in 2004, drawing on its Euphonia series and using the DALI tweeter module.2 The name comes from Mount Helicon, in Greek myth the home of the nine Muses.2 The MK2 series that followed took in the Helicon 800 and 400 floor speakers, the Helicon 300 for a shelf or stand, the C200 centre and the W200 for the wall.2
In the MK2, a 1-inch dome covers the full treble and a ribbon tweeter is rolled in above about 13 kHz, where the dome starts to beam.3 The mid and bass drivers have light wood-fibre cones with low-loss rubber surrounds.3 Cabinets are laminated MDF with curved sides, veneered in real wood, lacquered to a high gloss and polished seven times.3
