Why it is renowned
Hi-Fi News named the CTA407 an Outstanding Product in its review of November 2023.1 Reviewing it for hi-fi+ in January 2024, Ed Selley found it as satisfying as its predecessor, the CTA405: it had the power for heavier music without strain and kept its delicacy and tone for quieter listening.2
Recognition
The story
The CTA407 grew out of the CTA405 and replaced both the CTA405a and the larger CTA408.32 It comes with four 6550 output valves in a push-pull ultra-linear stage giving 50 watts a channel, and its servo bias system adjusts itself to any valve of the 6550, KT88, KT120 and KT150 family.3 Forty LEDs on the front, ten for each output valve, show the state of the valves and can be switched off.3
Its toroidal output transformers were new with the CTA407; earlier models used basket-type designs.2 The phono stage is solid state, built around a recent version of Toshiba's 2SK147 low-noise FET, and takes moving-magnet and high-output moving-coil cartridges.23 The case is 435 by 215 by 420 millimetres and weighs 20 kilograms.3
