Why it is renowned
Reviewing its successor for hi-fi+ in 2024, Ed Selley named the CTA405 one of the reviewer's very favourite products of all time, an amplifier that balanced accuracy and musicality.1 Copland describes its successor, the CTA407, as a development of the CTA405, sought after by listeners worldwide since its launch.2
The story
The CTA405 was made from 2005 until 2019.3 Four 6550 beam power valves, run in ultra-linear configuration with low global feedback, gave 50 watts a channel, from eleven valves in all.3 Behind the inputs sat a line stage like the one in Copland's CTA305 preamplifier, and a built-in valve phono stage took moving-magnet and high-output moving-coil cartridges.31
When the KT120 valve appeared, the amplifier was reworked to take it as the CTA405a, which needed a fan to cool the top of the case.1 The CTA407 later replaced the CTA405a in the range.1
