Melsted Badehotel

Why it is renowned

The MICHELIN Guide added Melsted Badehotel to its selection of hotels in 2026.¹² Its inspectors note the functionalist building of 1935, the 21 rooms restored in a 1930s seaside style by the designer Josephine Malling, the beach meadow of 18,000 square metres with its own bathing jetty, and a kitchen built on Bornholm's seasonal produce.²

The story

Klara Christensen began by letting rooms in her house to summer guests; in 1935 she built a new white functionalist building beside it and called the place Pension Ellebæk.³ The hotel counts 1932 as its opening year and calls itself the first seaside hotel on Bornholm.¹ It was sold in 1949 and passed through several owners, among them Harry Hammer, Aksel Hansen and Lillian and Benny Henriksen.³ The restaurateur Erik Noe bought it in 1995 and restored the white buildings with their blue windows.³ From 2000 Lise Hjort Madsen refurnished the rooms after the small seaside hotels of the English south coast and brought in the chef Erwin Lauterbach and two of his cooks from Saison.³ The Bornholm businessman Michael Almeborg bought it in 2018 and renewed terraces, roofs and the restaurant's windows.³ The Halborg-Bendtsen family took over in the autumn of 2021; the interior architect Josephine Malling drew the new rooms, and the head chef Mathias Sejer Sørensen and his wife Andrea Aguirre Suarez run the hotel.³¹ The 21 rooms sit in six buildings on a beach plot of about 18,000 square metres; three of them are flats in a thatched farmhouse at the back of the garden.⁴ The hotel opens from Easter to the autumn school holiday in week 42.³
