Why it is renowned
Monocle has written about the Herning knitter as a family business that keeps on knitting through good times and bad.1 The magazine reported a collection of knits made with Comme des Garçons, and knitwear produced for Opening Ceremony in New York and Los Angeles, Colette in Paris and Loveless in Tokyo.1 In December 2025 the house released the second season of its collaboration with JJJJound.2
The story
The S.N.S. Herning trademark was founded in 1919 by the manufacturer Søren Nielsen Skyt.3 As a young man he sold woollen and linen goods he made himself, carrying them by bicycle to the towns nearby.3 He worked beside his father on the hand-operated knitting machines then spreading through the trade, and an inventory dated 20 October 1923 lists woollen vests, men's under-trousers, socks, men's sweaters, women's jumpers and ladies' undershirts.3
The factory is called Skyt Strikvarer and stands in the industrial area of Herning; the founder's son Holger Skyt has run it together with his son, Søren N. Skyt.1 Its knitting machines work from punch cards, and the knitters sign every sweater they make.1 Its range runs from the FISHERMAN sweater to the STARK cardigan.4
