Why it is renowned
Carlsberg Elephant is the strong lager in Carlsberg's range, of Danish origin.1 In the United States it is among the Carlsberg beers imported directly from Denmark.2 Its name and label carry the elephant, one of the brewery's early emblems, after which some of its lagers are named.2
The story
Carlsberg links the name to the statues that guard its brewery gate.31 It is pale gold, with a malty character, a note of caramel and a dry bitterness.1 The group lists it as a bock of 7.2 percent alcohol; Carlsberg's own beer site describes an extra strong, full-bodied pilsner of pilsner malt and rice at 6.2 percent.13
