Why it is renowned

The lamp won first prize in a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, and in the 1980s it was the best-selling Danish design of its day.1 Dezeen, reporting on the GUBI House in London in 2024, singled out a cascade of Semi Pendants among its key pieces.2

The story

Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup drew the Semi in 1968.1 They were reacting against the soft, organic forms then common in Danish interiors and wanted sharp lines and a geometric shape.1 The shade is enamelled metal, formed as two quarter-circles joined back to back, and throws a cone of diffused light downward.1 It is made in several sizes and colours.1
