Why it is renowned
The Gräshoppa Floor Lamp and the Cobra are counted among the best-known works of Greta Magnusson Grossman, the Swedish designer and architect who built a career in Los Angeles; her work was shown at MoMA in New York and the National Museum in Stockholm in the 1940s and 1950s.1
The story
Grossman left Stockholm for the United States in 1940 and from the 1940s to the 1960s ran her own architecture practice in Los Angeles.1 The lamp was first produced in 1947.2 Its tripod leans back, which gives the lamp the look of an insect about to move, and the elongated conical shade rotates to aim the light.2 GUBI also makes a pendant and table lamps in the Gräshoppa line.1
