Why it is renowned

The Ox Chair broke with the quiet lines of Danish furniture of its day: a heavy upholstered body with a headrest after an ox's horns, set on a thin steel base.1 It was Wegner's own favourite chair and stood in his living room until he died.2

The story

Hans J. Wegner launched the Ox Chair at the furniture fair in Fredericia in 1960, made by AP Workshop; the heavy body on a delicate base was hard to produce.31 In the late 1980s Wegner turned to Erik Jørgensen, whose upholsterers rebuilt it around moulded block foam so that it holds its shape.1 Fredericia bought Erik Jørgensen in 2020 and kept its workshop in Svendborg, where every Ox Chair is still upholstered.1
