Why it is renowned

The 2M series is Ortofon's range of moving-magnet cartridges, made in four variants to fit different turntables; the maker says it has become the cartridge of choice for many, from first-time vinyl listeners to those returning to old records.1 One of its models, the 2M Black LVB 250, won the EISA award for phono cartridge in 2021-2022.2

The story

Ortofon introduced the 2M series in 2007, with a body inspired by a cut diamond.3 The faceted design was created in collaboration with Moeller Jensen.4 The range runs in colours from the 2M Red through Blue and Bronze to the 2M Black, with the 2M Black LVB 250, a 2M Mono and a 2M 78.1

Each model comes in four bodies: the standard 2M, the low 2MR for Rega-type tonearms, a premounted version and the 2M Verso for bottom-mounted headshells.1 Owners can upgrade or replace the stylus and keep the cartridge body.1
